Follicles

Question:

A follicle may appear to disappear post ovulation, but will gradually fill back up and luteinize over the course of the ensuing 2-5 days (forming the corpus luteum).  So, it depends where you catch it in it’s cycle if you’re looking.  In general, you should expect to see it decrease in size by at least 50% immediately following ovulation, if it doesn’t in fact, "disappear". There’s a web site that talks about ultrasounds of follicles at http://radiology.creighton.edu I hope that answered your question! Melissa

Does anyone know if the follicle disappears after it ruptures or does it slow shrink back?    Chris    Wife to Gregg    Mommy to Maddy (7),    Diagnosed with PCOS in Aug 98    TTC #2

I’ve seen a lot of talk about Drs. checking follicle size. My doctor has not said anything about this to me.  I’m wondering if it’s normal that he hasn’t said anything about this.  This is only my second month on Clomid.

My RE never checked my follicle size on Clomid either. She used a combination of BBT and blood work to determine whether I had ovulated. Now that we are on injectables, we check the sizes a couple of times during a cycle (along with frequent b/w) so we know how I’m responding and when to do the hCG injection and the IUI. Best of luck!    I’m with Trisha. I’d ask for a check of the follicle size.  I find that it really helps me emotionally to "know where we stand" follicle-wise. Also, it can help you to save $$ if you’re doing IUI (eg, if your follicles aren’t maturing enough) and it’s a good diagnostic tool.  For example, if you’re not making good size follicles, the doc can help you to pursue another path. Lots of doctors DON"T monitor folks on clomid. Most of those are ob-gyns. RE’s usually will monitor you. I’d recommend asking for a lining checkup via ultrasound when you get around day 11-12, and measure the follicle. It’s good medical practice. — Trisha93, ttc 6+ yrs IUis,IVFs,FETs, 3m/c Next mood swing-6 minutes
