Follistim drop leaks from skin
Question:
Hi everyone, This is my 1st cycle of injectibles, and 4th shot of Follistim was tonight. For some reason, it hurt really bad tonight. As Dh withdrew the needle, some of the Follistim leaked from my skin. He put a band-aid on it, and there was some blood on the band-aid when I took it off later. Does that matter that there was a leak? Any way to prevent it? Could he have hit a blood vessel, causing the blood? Thanks in advance! Jennifer PCOS 1st cycle of Follistim
Response:
Dear Jennifer, I often have a drop or two leak out. Once it seemd like more than 1/2 of it came back out. So now I always have a cotton pad ready and put pressure on the site immediately after taking the needle out. (Make sure you’re going in at a 90 degree angle.) As long as you don’t see a bood return when you pull back on the syringe, then you are not in a vein. Sometimes there will still be a little blood where a small surface vein was knicked. It’s nothing to worry about. I’d say I have a drop or two of blood on the bandaid when I take it off 90% of the time. Sincerely, Janet

Kitty, Another suggestion (given to me by a registered nurse) is to leave the needle in the site for a count of 10 after the med is delivered. This will minimize the amount that will come back out whether injection is subq or IM. Best wishes & God bless! Angela ttc 11 months 2 failed IVF with genetic testing 1 son with fatal genetic disease

Hi Jennifer, I’ve been on injects for some time now, and there’s always a few where the medication leaks out with some blood. I think this is fairly typical and normal. I have had occassion to hit a vein and it did bleed alot, but no harm done. You should be fine with what you are doing. I always try to hold cotton over the site for a few minutes, applying some pressure to cut down on the leakage and blood. Good luck with this cycle, I hope it’s the one for you!
