grrrr…(long)

Question:

> I was told for over 20 years, that until I was ready to deal with my "food > issues" that I would never get any help.

Sounds too familiar. I would also suggest younger doctors, they are more open to new topics and treatments. — Katharina dav…@german-usa.com 35/5.9/C0-nt/met1500/262/244

Hi everyone, Well on tuesday was my appointment to my new endo. It was the biggest waste of time. So, me and my mom went into the room and all the basic doctor stuff happened. He finally came in. My mom was telling him what’s going on with me and that we’re basically there for a second opinion. He started asking questions then he got a call. It was some guy calling to get the doctor tickets for this Saturdays baseball game. I really didn’t appreciate that very much. He and my mom talked and he breifly looked over my records. He kept asking me how much i eat. Not much I said. Then he asked what i eat for breakfast, nothing. Lunch, sometimes I eat when I get home from school. Dinner? Yes i eat dinner. Do you eat a lot of snacks inbetween? No not really. Every once in a while. So you drink a lot of soda. Not really. I drink juice and water mostly. Then a look of puzzlement came over his face. Then he started talking to my mom again. He just kept saying that my mom should take me to a nutritionist. He asked me if i exercise. Well i walk to school everyday. How far is that? About two miles. Well walking isn’t exercise he said. At that point I was ready to get up and leave. Now I don’t know what to do. Since I was a year old everyone has been telling my mom to just stop feeding me so much or that i should exercise more. I have three older brothers. Trust me I got plenty of exercise when i was little. I know there is something wrong with me because my cousin has the exact same thing. We’re almost exactly alike the only difference is our physical features. Doctors can’t figure out what was wrong with her either. I’m just getting so frustrated. Does anyone have any ideas? My gp just put me on bc to help with my period pain and such. those just made it worse. I was thinking of have my gp test me for ir then seeing if she’d put me on Metaformin or something. Is that a good idea? Thanks for listening.

I went through the same garbage when I was a teen. They basically didn’t beleive me when I said that I wasn’t eating much. They thought that I wasn’t saying the truth. Well they didn’t say it in my face at that time. I went to a dietician, with little effect. I was even hospilized, with no effect. That’s when say told me in my face that I must have cheated. Find another doctor, maybee a young one. They seem to be much more open to new stuff than the old ones. Check first, if they are willing to prescribe metformin for PCO, before you make an appointment. It’s just to frustrating to try several until you find one. Hang in there, its not you, its them!!!! Gather material from the web, read it, and make sure that the doctor understands it too. Good luck. — Katharina dav…@german-usa.com 35/5.9/C0-nt/met1500/262/244

Maybe you should tell everyone the general area you are from (you need not get too specific, this is the Net) and maybe some of the Cysters can come up with recommendations of sympathetic drs. GOOD LUCK!

Cathy (to email, delete spamslam) My Web PCO page

I understand completely! So sorry you had to go through that. It really does prove how physicians are really just people and you can be far more educated on subjects…especially when it comes to your own health. It doesn’t mean disregard all physicians…just means to choose carefully and never let one of them talk to you condescendingly. I saw 5 physicians about PCOS and all of them clueless. It can really make one depressed. Don’t give up!!!!!! Well I live in Chicago. I can’t go out to any of the suburbs though because of my lack of transportation :( I’d really appreciate it though if anyone could come up with some docs it’s hard finding one with half a brain. Hi Grace, I know exactly what you are going through. It took me 16 years (from ages 19 to 35) before I got a doctor take me seriously. I didn’t give up though, and now I feel 1000 ercent better and almost ahve a normal life. Please excuse me if you already know everything that I tell you here! Here is what I would do. Consider the fact that you may have a thyroid condition, not just PCO. A number of women have both, and I am one of them. In my case, it took 16 years to ge the diagnosis because my thyroid blood levels always looked perfect. I finally found out that there is a type of thyroid illness that occurs with normal blood levels, it is called non-antibody Hashimoto’s and they had to ultrasound and then biopsy my thyroid to discover it. So, you might want to try calling or faxing some WOMEN doctors in your area, ans ask them if, based on your symptoms, they would run the standard thyroid and PCO tests (I list them below). Write down all of your symptoms, inlcuding things like, overweight despite not eating much (and it really helps to write down exactly what you eat for one week to prove it–I ahd a doctor tell me I had to be lying to him because if I was really eating 1200 calories a day that I couldn’t possibly be as fat as I was! jerk!). So record what you eat, then list all your symptoms: how much you sleep every night, if your skin is dry, if your ahir falls out by the handful, record your periods if you have them, and if you don’t, how long it has been since you did. Take your temperature every morning for three weeks. Keep the thermometer shaken down and at your bedside. Then, when you wake up, put it under your tongue for ten minutes, and record the temperature. Mine was always about 95 degrees! This is really, really, low and indicates a thyroid problem. You should also take your pulse, placing three fingers over your wrist pulse, and count for a full minute (it helps to have a clock with a second hand). If it is below 60, you also may have low thyroid. Now, for the tests to ask for: TSH – thyroid stimulating hormone test Free and total T4 Free and total T3 FSH – follicle stimulating hormone test LH – Leutinzing hormone Have your doctor calculate the ratio LH/FSH Free testosterone Fasting glucose level fasting insulin level These are the basics, and any doctor should be willing to perform them based on your symptoms. If these are all normal, then you need to do more advanced tests, which I coudl tell you about if you like. You can read about these tests on the Website http://www.healthanswers.com , go to the search list and choose endocrine. Then choose the tests, and you will see all of these listed. You can read what each test is and why it is performed. You will be so knowledgeable that your doctor wouldn’t refuse to run them! Best of luck to you, remember it took me 16 years to get diagnosed, but I didn’t give up, I got educated. So learn everything you can and have your mom learn too. You will then find out what is wrong. Best of luck to you! Eve – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Well on tuesday was my appointment to my new endo. It was the biggest > waste of time.
