HELP! Re: Falling asleep after eating!
Question:
hi folks, for the past year and a half, i’ve been experiencing a strange…i guess you would call it a "symptom" that i’ve always just considered an annoyance, but now that it’s actually getting in the way of living my life, it’s really starting to concern me. in terms of a little history: yes, i’ve been diagnosed with PCOS. i am underweight, as a result of being an avid runner and also not having the best eating habits in the world. my fasting glucose was tested once, and was normal…so they never went ahead and tested insulin. why, i’m not sure…but they didn’t. i have all the other classic PCOS things — total lack of periods, elevated DHEAS, elevated testosterone (not free, the other one), LH: FSH ratio of 20:9…yada yada yada. so here’s my problem — i’d say that within about 20 minutes to a half-hour of eating, i feel about ready to take a nap. and generally? i do. for a good 4 – 5 hours sometimes. it’s almost like i am INSTANTLY exhausted after i finish eating. i’ve had various theories on why this happens, over the years, including: 1. because my eating habits aren’t exactly the best and the times i eat are so far and spaced apart, my digestive system draws all my body’s energy to itself to digest what i’ve eaten, and the rest of my body just gets dog tired and i fall asleep while it’s digesting. 2. (and this is the most ridiculously simplistic) "most people get tired after meals." my meals are VERY high in carbohydrate content, in fact i’d say…85-90% so, because of the running i do and the fact that well….i went about a year once doing the low-carb/no-carb thing and ended up in a period of bingeing awfully on them uncontrollably — my body doesn’t tolerate the low-carb thing, no idea why. what i’m wondering is….does any of this sound like IR to you? diabetes? some other medical condition i should look into getting checked out, or do you think the two theories, based on what i’ve said about myself, are probably true…and it’s just my body needing energy for digestion?? i was wondering if maybe getting so insanely tired so immediately after eating is a sign of some other problem i might have that i might need to look into. if anyone can offer me any thoughts or insight, i’d really genuinely appreciate it. this falling asleep business may have been okay during college, but it’s not going to be such a great habit during an actual workday. i look forward to hearing from someone!! Eve

You say your eating habits weren’t the best. I assume that means eating wasn’t habitual? If so, I can relate — in college, I managed to be on the food plan that stopped at 5:30pm, and I was waking up for the day at 6pm, so basically didn’t eat for the two months I was there. For the longest time after that, if I had enough to eat at any given meal, no matter what it was (granted, it was usually meat, not carb, but still, there were the french fry and cheeto days too), I’d get pretty tired too. Body went, oop, not used to this, digestion exhausts me, let’s take nap. After my first leap of weight gain, this kind of went away, but I can still get bogged down after a particularly large evening meal. I couldn’t say whether it’s an IR thing, but for me it was definitely a "learn how to digest food again" thing. — *^_^* at four o’clock; dive! dive! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::: [wednesday]

Dr Atkins mentions this as a symptom of Syndrome x – your body is totally confused over insulin and releases huge amounts after any carbs. This means your blood sugar plummets and you feel knackered! Hope it helps, Lesley xxx

I LOVE sushi, but I have to get in my pajamas and get in the bed before I start eating it because after the 4th or 5th bite, I can’t keep my eyes open…but I do love it. It’s my one carb binge.
