I was going to try Rezulin, but……………..

Question:

Since I have had a bad time with Metformin I was going to try Rezulin, but a family member who was taking Rezulin just had to have a liver transplant. The Rezulin destroyed her liver after 6 months.  Now I am scared to try it. Cathy — P.H.O.B.I.A. Cathy, First, I’m very sorry to hear about your family member.  I can understand your apprehension, however, please do not discard Rezulin if you are dissatisfied with Metformin. *Very few* people have had any type of negative reaction to Rez.  Before beginning, you must have liver testing to ensure no underlying liver problems. Then monthly testing every month for 6 months.  Then I believe the test is every 2 months. Rezulin has worked *very* well for me and I would hate for someone to discard the possibility of taking Rezulin because of a negative reaction experienced by one person.  Of course, YMMV.  Again, I’m very sorry about your family member. I can understand your concern. There are two drugs coming out within this year that will probably force Rezulin off the market (IMHO) we posted the news article on this our website: http://www.netcolony.com/members/pcolc/pcolc.html Click on the "News" Link, and there is an article there about the new drugs. You might find this interesting. M half sister also has pcos and we share the same father. She took Resulin with no problem. Her proble started around 16 and her nipples were eaking fluid. She is off REsulin now and is having her own perods every month. Lucky girl!!

Response:

Perhaps you don’t understand the rarity of liver problems caused by Rezulin. Additionally, while Rezulin was being tested, the test subjects were NOT monitored.  Furthermore, I believe the subjects also had diabetes and whose organs were already challenged. Rezulin is safe when your liver has been deemed healthy, you are monitored and follow up with monthly liver tests. Years of taking BCP’s can result in heart attacks, high blood pressure, etc. Do we worry about that?  No. IMHO, Shannon L. > When i read the contraindications that jumped out at me too.
