I’m a newbie to this ng (but not ng’s and bbs’s in general) and just wanted to share my two cents with you all. A friend of mine, who had struggled with her weight her whole life, was 5′8" and over 300 lbs when 4 months ago, she decided to make a complete lifestyle change. She started VERY low carbing and walking. Walking turned to swimming which lead to the gym. She now does 20 mins each of cardio and strength training everyday. Since she started this she has lost 90 lbs. in 16 weeks and feels just great! She says she doesn’t crave carbs at all anymore and she can now shop in the non-plus size sections of dept. stores. YAY Shannon!
I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago after years and years of irregular monthlies etc etc.. The doc put me on metformin which helped in the beginning but made me feel sick, tired and grumpy all the time. After playing around with my dosage I finally gave up on it all together and starting packing on the pounds. I’m currently 5′6", 195 lbs and last night after stepping on the scale for the first time in 4 months I decided that this was bullsh!t, I could either keep going down the path I was, being unable to conceive, feeling miserable all the time and having a totally negative self image or I could pull up my socks and do something about it. I cut out a major portion of my carb intake, no more bread, crackers, cereal, potatoes, pasta, specialty coffees, two lumps in my tea and reg. coffee etc.. and in 24 hours I feel great and guess what? I’m starting my period. I can’t believe it. It’s been 4 months since my last one, (I think I only got it then because it was my wedding day..lol) and prior to that it had been a year. That is it! The pantry and fridge are getting expunged and it’s my turn to start a new life. Hope to share lots of recipes, ideas and ups n downs with you all in the future! Cheers! milady

Wow! Your friend is doing amazingly well. This is motivation for me to do more exercise for sure. How much walking did she used to do before she started swimming? 90 pounds in 16 weeks is awe inspiring. By the way, welcome to the newsgroup.

Metformin is definitely not for everyone. For those who can tolerate it, though, it’s almost a miracle drug. I have PCOS and started taking it 3 years ago. I was completely infertile at the time. But after I’d been taking metformin for just a few months, I conceived; and now I have a beautiful, healthy daughter. The metformin also normalized my cholesterol. I started low-carbing not quite 4 weeks ago, and I decided to stop taking metformin. I wasn’t sure how it would affect me to stop, but I don’t have health insurance right now to have lab work done. However, I have just ovulated, which I take as an excellent sign. In my pre-metformin days I never did. Metformin makes ovulation more likely because it so effectively reduces abnormally high insulin levels. *But low-carbing does the same thing* ….without drugs. If you stick with the plan, I think you have an excellent chance of conceiving. Keep us posted! Reb 222/215.5/120
