Hmmm… maybe I should get my thyroid retested then….  I am generally a very high energy person (even without caffeine)…. could i still be that way and have hypothyroidism? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yes I have… and it is PCOs… which affect your hormones.. oh yes, I was had low thyroid function for years, swam competitively (ultra competitive), worked my way through college, hiked, climbed, biked, etc. and so forth – I learned how to induce adrenaline surges for the extra kick (it is an adaptation technique that children learn).   I used to pass my T3/T4 blood serum tests all the time, I failed the basal metabolism rules (body temperature, thinning hair, dry, scaley skin, sluggish metabolism, not that I was ever particularly overweight in those days).  I did have a hair trigger temper when I was irritated (read hungry) – the thyroid is really important in blood sugar regulation. Hypoglycemia is an indicator (or should be) of inadequate thyroid function.  I eventually had a thyroid challenge test, which showed my thyroid not responding correctly.  I have been on low dose synthroid for 8 years, it is terrific to wake up alert, have warm hands and feet and supple skin (not to mention healthy hair!) — Dragon Mom

yes, or a doctor willing to listen, I was very clear about what I had done and why I believed my thyroid was at fault. I meant to mention I had enlarged thyroid glands as well, which no one caught, but I noticed as soon as they shrank back to normal — and I eat fish, seaweed and all the frequently enough that goiters from lack of iodine is an impossibility. good luck! — Dragon Mom

Looks like I should make an appointment with my doc.  My temperature is generally between 96.5 and 97.5 (I’m always cold when everyone else is comfortable), I have chronically dry skin, my hair is thinning and I do have a slow metabolism.  What tests should I make sure he asks for? Although they could be signs of other things, Tam, those symptoms, with a tendancy to put on weight easily, are all the earmarks of a sluggish thyroid gland. Ev
