Just diagnosed PCO

Question:

Hi: I’m new to alt.support.pco.  I was just diagnosed a couple of days ago w/PCO. I have an excellent doctor, he is one of the top 10 in the country.  He advised me NOT to use injectibles, as they tend to cause many, many multiples in those w/PCO.  Instead, he suggested I try glucophage (usually for diabetics, although I am not diabetic).  Glucophage IS at least covered by my insurance.  He said this drug has been found to cause ovulation in those w/PCO. The next step if glucophage doesn’t work will be IVF.  I just got on their waiting list yesterday.  I am really depressed.  I am only 26 years old and already I may have to do IVF!!! Just wanted some support and maybe to hear from someone that used Glucophage and it worked for them. Holly

Response:

welcome to the wonderful world of pco :) as for the glucophage, it has worked for me. i started taking it ( 1500mg/day) back in may of last year after 3 unsuccessful attempts at getting me to ovulate with clomid alone.  i took the glucophage for 8 weeks, and when no ovulation seemed to take place, we added in clomid.  first 50mg which didn’t work, then 100mg which stopped working after 2 cycles, then 150mg for 3 cycles and i conceived on the 3rd cycle.  i am now 6 1/2 wks pg !    you mentioned you would be doing glucophage, and then moving on to ivf?  did your doc say anything about adding in clomid?  also im wondering why he said no injects…. i know many girls with pco that have had great success with the injects.   reguarless, i hope the glucophage works for you and you don’t have to move to ivf. +++thoughts

Response:

Oh, by the way.  I did clomid for 3 cycles and now my uterine lining is way to thin and I have no CM!!!  Very, very frustrating! Holly

Response:

hey holly this is corinna, i am 25, and my husband and i have tried for 7 yrs to get pregnant, 3 mo ago i was diagnosed w pcos and imediatly began metformin/glucophage, the first couple of weeks i was a bit nautious and felt groggy, but after the 3rd week it straightened out and since then it has been nothing short of a miracle!!! i have lost 20lbs, i have gotten my periods regularly and i am ovulating! this month will be the first month we "try", i avoided trying the past months to be able to lose the extra weight before getting pregnant. not to mention feeling emmotionally normal and extremely happy, i diddnt realize how depressed i really was untill recently. i hope this encourages you at all. bye for now.

Response:

I can’t tell you how much this encourages me.  I appreciate anything positive anyone has to say about this condition and glucophage!!! Thanks, Holly

Response:

Holly, After failed clomid cycle w/ no ovulation and a three month wait after that to get rid of the cyst it produced, then more wait to finally get tested for IR…..I finally was put on metformin! After 2 1/2 (almost 3) months on it at 1500 mg a day…I ovulated..! Since then I have had 4 consecutive, ovulatory,30 day cycles. Now this is a miracle….Before i was not ovulating and having 72-84 day cycles. Metformin does work in a large percentage of PCO’ers. God Bless you and Best wishes ! shelley
