Metformin during Pregnancy
Question:
I have a question for those of you who continued or discussed continuing Metformin during pregnancy with your doctor. I had a miscarriage in August, and I’ve always wondered if I had been allowed to continue taking Metformin if this could have been prevented. My RE refuses to let me continue with it, should I get pregnant again because he says that there isn’t "enough evidence that it’s safe during pregnancy". I’m currently on Metformin 1500mg/day and Dexamethasone 0.5mg/day. What do you guys know about continuing Metformin AND Dexamethasone during pregnancy? I’d be curious to know what you’ve all been told. Also, people who are diabetic and take Metformin for that – do they have to stop during pregnancy too?? Thanks in advance… Heather PCOS TTC#1 1 angel (8/00)
Response:
Heather, I know a few people who have continued met during pregnancy. (I don’t think one should continue dex, tho) I think this website (Glueck’s site on Metformin during pregnancy for PCOS) would be of interest to you. http://blues.fd1.uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm#Metformin and Pregnancy Best wishes, -Kay
Response:
I was told that if I ever get pregnant while taking Met, I will have to stop immediately and start on insulin shots. At this point, I would do anything to be pregnant with a healthy child.
