Metformin–How do I know it's working?
Question:
Metformin is the market name for Glucophage, which is normally used for diabetes. However, over the past few years, researchers have found that in women with PCOS who are exhibiting insulin resistance benefit greatly from the administration of Metformin. Here’s a good website for more information on the use of Met with PCOS. http://blues.fd1.uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm You will need a blood work-up to detect fasting insulin levels and also testosterone levels, among other things. Find a good Reproductive Endocrinologist and get him/her to do the tests to see if Metformin would benefit you. I have been on it for four months, lost over 20 lbs. and had two periods, albeit 38 days apart, but that’s better than what I was doing before, which was nothing. Welcome to the group, also! There are a great bunch of ladies here, and an occasional DH, but everybody is very supportive of each other.

Metformin Hydrochloride –brand name is Glucophage–commonly used to treat diabetes, though RE’s use to treat PCOS and a few maverick drs. use to treat obesity. I started Met on 6/4/99 at only 1000 mg/day coupled with continuing BCP for the time being. I go back to the endo next week and will probably stop taking the BCP and increase Met to 1500 mg/day or more. Question is…for all you experienced with Met…how do I know when/if it’s working other than lab tests? Do you feel differently? Do you judge by whether you’re having periods? I’m just not sure. I worked so hard to get on this and now don’t know what to expect. Thanks! –Kristina
Response:
Because you are on bcps, I don’t really know if there is any way to tell if the Met is working without lab tests. In my own personal experience, Met brought back my periods after two months on 1000 mg. per day. I do not know if they have resumed any sort of normal pattern yet, as I have only had two periods since my Provera bleed in April.
