My friend needs help…

Question:

Some of you may remember me from a long time ago… I am hoping you will be able to help me.  A very close friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with PCOS.  She has done two months of clomid, the first (100mg) resulted in an egg, the second she didn’t respond.  She has also been told that her lining is paper thin. She is having a lap and ovary drilling (they drill 5 holes or something?) in June and is scared sick.  She has had a lap before and knows what to expect, but she is very concerned about the ovary drilling procedure.  She would like to know about the recovery time and what to expect. Once this procedure is over, they want her to take one more month of clomid (50mg) and then go on to injectibles. Does anyone have any experiences with this?  Can anyone shed any light on what may be going on?  The Consultant seems to think that if she doesn’t respond after this procedure, then she won’t at all. I thank you all for your help. FTTA Alyson

Response:

I also have PCOS, diagnosed officially Sept 99.  I had my ovarian drilling and lap in Jan.  I am currently on 250 clomid with HCG shot.  Its not pleasant but its not bad either.  You will be stiff for a few days.  It is best not to lift or do anything strenuous for a while due to scar tissue can form.  There is plenty more I could say but don’t want to bore the audience extensive information. Is there some reason why they are not pursuing the insulin sensitization medecines, such as metformin? Sorry, I am not familiar with this – why would insulin make a difference? Alyson

Response:

If you are insulin resistant, your body produces too much insulin which can, as a result, flood the body with too much insulin and cause MAJOR hormone imbalances (such as irregular or missing periods, hirsuitism, high blood pressure, etc.)  Thus the reason for insulin sensitization drugs such as Metformin (Glucophage).  Insulin Resistance can be detected with blood tests such as a Fasting Glucose, Glucose Tolerance Test and others that I can’t really remember.     Hope that this information helped. In my previous post, you will note that I am also on insulin resistant drugs but still required surgery even though some of the symptoms were helped. Mrs. G

Response:

(pg & m/c ment) Alyson, Just thought I’d let you know that I am not overtly insulin resistant, however metformin did and does help me a lot.  My cycles have become a *lot* more normal now.  Another couple of benefits I had were that I got pg the very first cycle on metformin and I kept that pg longer than my previous three, which all had ended at the 5/6 week stage.  This one lasted to 19 weeks and was lost from either incompetent cervix or premature labor–the jury’s still out.  It was not PCOS-related, in any case.  So. . . I am a big metformin booster.
