I started Atkins on 1/18/99, because I’d tried Sugar Busters but had a hard time sticking to it because the carbs allowed kept me hungry. Since Atkins, I’ve lost 31 pounds of fat, gained nine pounds of muscle, and that’s including the 8 weeks I was immobilized by torn ligaments in my knee. > How did the diet affect your cholesterol or triglycerides, if at all?
Total Cholesterol went from 273 pre-Atkins to 200 tested at about 11 months. HDL (good cholesterol) went from 29 to 56. Triglycerides went from the 300’s to the 100’s, but I don’t know the exact numbers. Resting heart rate has always been low, still is (around 55 bpm), blood pressure runs around 112/69. > Is there anything specificI should consider? You should go the library and read whatever you can get your hands on concerning the various plans… CAD, CKD, Atkins, Protein Power, Sugar Busters, etc. Protein Power has an excellent explaination of low carb physiology for the layperson. Some people find it easier to ‘phase out’ high carb foods, avoiding the side-effects of a drastic change like Atkins’ induction. Other people find that they are really addicted to Carbs, and a ‘cold-turkey’ approach like Atkins is the only way to get over them. With Atkins, you may experience some discomfort for the first 1-2 weeks, but the headaches, constipation, weakness, etc. passes as your body becomes more efficient at burning fat for fuel (it’s been relying mostly on carbs for energy thus far). With some of the less restrictive diets, you may not experience these side effects, or not to as great a degree, but depending your own body, you might have more of a problem with cravings. Basically it’s a YMMV sort of thing… you have to figure it out for yourself. — mboulden at hotmail dot com (posting address is a spam trap) 213 in December ‘98 Atkid since 1/18/99, soccer+pumpin’ iron 205/183/? I went on lowcarb almost a year ago (it’ll be a year on March 15). You can see the weight loss I’ve achieved at http://www.fortunecity.com/boozers/tequila/590/index.html My periods normalized fairly rapidly (I’m now quite regular) and my skin has cleared up also. I started by trying the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet, realized that the "Reward Meal" was just messing me up, switched to Atkins, and later incorporated some of the concepts from Protien Power (which is extremely similar). >How did the diet affect your cholesterol or triglycerides, if at all?
I hadn’t gotten those measured, but it DID bring down my blood pressure. >Is there anything specificI should consider? I really want whatever I >do to >be a long term solution (or, at least part of one!)
Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that lowcarb is THE answer for everyone, but it is worth trying. Read DR. ATKINS’ NEW DIET REVOLUTION and PROTEIN POWER, hang out in alt.support.diet.low-carb, make sure you have all the right info. If you have the right metabolism for it, lowcarb can be FANTASTIC. Good luck to you. Atalanta Pendragonne http://www.fortunecity.com/boozers/tequila/590/index.html – The Amazing Shrinking Atalanta!

Hi, I started with Atkins lost over 20 lbs in 6 weeks and then nothing for 4 1/2 months. My cholesterol shot way up (the bad one) and I switched to sugar busters about 3 weeks ago and started losting again ,about 8 lbs so far. sugar busters is moderate carbs, but the good ones only and I like it better than Atkins as well as it is healthier . I originally looked into PCOS because I wasnt losing on Atkins and thought I might be IR ,but since I am losing on sugar Busters ,maybe I’m not. Lauren

Hi, all I am thinking of trying a low carb diet but I am baffled by which diet to choose. What experiences have you all had with low carb diets? How did you go about choosing which one to try? How did the diet affect your cholesterol or triglycerides, if at all? Is there anything specificI should consider? I really want whatever I do to be a long term solution (or, at least part of one!)
