Question:

I can tell you right now to stop looking for chocolate substitutes. When you start this program you need to follow it to the letter for two weeks.  And induction does NOT include chocolate– sugar free, low carb or otherwise.  Your body will go through some withdrawal and expect to feel kind of lousy for a few days.  Don’t be afraid to eat the good fats like olive oil and butter. Don’t be afraid to eat large quantities of NO carb foods like roast chicken and beef and keep your veggie carbs to a minimum. Enjoy deviled eggs (made with real mayo not salad dressing) for snacks.  The idea is to fill up on the good stuff and as you continue you will find your cravings and your hunger subsiding naturally.  Then you will be able to start adding some carbs back–including some low carb chocolates.  But be careful. Many people have trouble with this as it starts them craving the real thing again.  You may be OK with it.  I found that a cup of DIET Swiss Miss hot chocolate (not the one labeled Sugar Free–has to say Diet on the front) to be the lowest in carbs (5 grams net I think) and it really satisfies a chocolate craving.  (I add a TBL of heavy cream to it). Drink lots of water!  Above all start the program out the way Atkins defines it. Then you’ll find you’ll be able to customize it to fit your goals and individual needs. Good luck! Jan

I  read the first 12 chapters (up through ending induction) to get myself started and then a week or so later read the rest of the book. Use it for a constant reference.  BJ

Yes.  You need to read the whole book.  But that doesn’t mean you have to wait to get started.  Skim read it and pick out a few things to go by… and get started. Then systematically read the whole book and mark the information you need to keep going in the best way.  Yes, you need to read the whole book, but that’s not an excuse to delay starting. Hello everyone! I’ve been lurking for a few days, and thought I’d drop in to tell you who I am, and why I’m here. I’ve not been formally diagnosed yet, but I’ve got "hormonal test results consistent with polycystic ovarian syndrome."  I’ll have to go to a reprod endocrin. to know for sure.  A newsgroup for PCOS support steered me in the direction of a low carb diet, since a lot of pcos sufferers also show signs of hyperinsulinisn.  One of the many symptoms of pcos is obesity, so that explains a lot of things for me.  I’ve been yo-yo-ing for the past four years or so, so I decided to try something that seems like it’s really going to work.  It’s been working for a friend of mine, so, here I am! I’ve been reading the Atkins book for a few days now, and today is grocery day for us, so I’m stocking up.  I begin  my two week induction period tomorrow.  Wish me luck! My biggest problem is going to be the chocolate.  I remember seeing something many posts ago (you guys are hard to keep  up with — lots of posts every day!) about a site that had a low-carb chocolate recipe. Can somebody please post again? I’ve already lost a couple of pounds because I’ve been exercising pretty regularly for the past two weeks, so that’s why numbers show it even though I start the Atkins tomorrow. Hi Kitty!  I used to eat a lot of ice cream sandwiches before this diet.  After 3 or 4 days it seemed like my body could easily adjust.  Watching the pounds melt away was the #1 incentive for me.   When I started the diet I also started jogging.  When I weighed 210, I could only run for about 2 to 3 min.  Then I would walk for a while.  I tried to jog at least 2 or three times a week then walk if I could not go longer.  Now that I have lost my 35 pounds I can jog sometimes for 3 miles.  I once talked to a lady online who had lost over 100 lbs on this diet.  She said she walked 30 min a day.
