Falling hair
Question:
Dear Jodi, Hadn’t thought of that but I bet your right. Rusty
Response:
Jodi, Yeah, I’ve been trying to increase my fat intake and make sure that I am getting enough of that. I don’t really think it’s a sugar thing, but maybe. I’ll talk to my therapist some about it tomorrow. Hugs, Kerri "The real gold has always been the individual spirit…" – Tori Amos "this I swear you’re the fiercest calm I’ve been in" T. Amos

Excerpts from netnews.alt.support.eating-disord: 28-Nov-100 Re: Falling Eat more protien my dear and lay off the sugar.
not neccassarily… not on both counts, at least. my own experience with hair has been, the amount of protein you eat doesn’t matter a bit. it is VERY VERY hard to not get enough protein. the need for protein is highly overestimated in most cases. what i have found to matter is fat. yes, FAT. eat some. i swear, in my experience, i could eat all the egg beaters and fat free cheese in the world and my hair still fell out and looked like shit. i thought it was a protein thing, too. but i think it’s a fat thing. honest. try eating more fat. try eating ENOUGH fat. with that said, try a multi vitamin perhaps? and with THAT said, have your homrone levels checked. i have recently been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndome. i think that this might be the underlying cause of my ED. it stems from a problem with insulin production… a sort of reverse diabetes if you will. excess insulin results in sky high andorgens which in turn result in missed periods, excess body hair, inability to lose weight, and baldness. yes it’s ironic that the same thing that makes you grow excess body hair can also make you lose the hair on your head. so if nutrition is really under wraps – and i mean you are honest to god eating healthy and not just eating "anorexic healthy" – and you are still losing your hair i’d highly suggest looking for a hormonal problem if you are losing that much hair. i mean, it is possible that it’s the stress of returning to nutrition, etc that is causing this… but if it’s getting worse, or doesn’t go away, it’s something to look into. it means, in a way, cutting down on sugar could help. but eating more protein probably won’t change a thing. – jodi <*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<* it was only fantasy – the wall was too high, as you can see no matter how he tried, he could not break free and the worms ate into his brain… – pink floyd <*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*=<*

Hi Kerri! I’m sorry you’re having this problem. I really feel for you, as I know personally what it’s like. I know you said you don’t see your nutritionist until mid December. But I am wondering if you could call & talk to her about this, since it is worrying you? Hey Kerri I have found that my hair loss is worse when I am eating properly, for about 6 months and the slows down. My friends have found that to – it’s worse when nourished than when starving, so take it as a good sign. Lucy, Thanks for the input. Actually, you didn’t scare me I’ve been through the hair loss before only last time it tapered off fairly quickly. I’m hoping that what happened to you doesn’t happen to me!!!! No offense, it took me so long to grow my hair out and I’m not willing to lose it all! I’ll do whatever it takes for me to stop this….well except eating meat….but perhaps I should definately up my proteing for a while I believe. I’m eating plenty of protein but I but I should up it even further. Kerri "The real gold has always been the individual spirit…" – Tori Amos "this I swear you’re the fiercest calm I’ve been in" T. Dear Kerri, I’m wondering if anyone knows how long it takes for one’s hair to stop falling out after stopping ed behaviours and returning to a "normal" diet.
I don’t mean to scare you, but I lost most ALL of my hair AFTER I had begun recovery, had regained a lot of weight, and was eating healthily. That is just my experience though. I borrowed quite a few baseball caps during that period! Hang in there, the best thing you can do now is to keep nourishing your body to prevent further damage. Good luck, Lucy

OK, you just scared me a lot… how far into people’s EDs did they come upon this problem?? Lori

Thanks for the reply Jc! I was attracted to your post because your subject header "falling hair" sounded so poetic.
perhaps I should write a recovery poem about it then? Actually, I am a poet. I’m majoring in English with a concentration on Creative writing and am currently studying with the Poet Laureate for the state of Ga (can you tell that I LOVE that class?) and he is an amazing professor and I’m learning lots. Dear Kerri, I was attracted to your post because your subject header "falling hair" sounded so poetic. I know that is not what your post is about, but it is a really nice combination of words. Even though what they signify for you is not so fun. My own hair tends not to fall out too much, but it did once. Here is what I have heard from others. I have one friend whose hair falls out only after she begins to recover her weight. The same thing happened with a young woman in my ED group. She ended up dying her hair blond so it wouldn’t be so obvious. Once when I was getting bald spots I just cut my hair. My hair is curly, so it curled around the bald spots and made them less obvious. I am not sure how long the hair falling out lasts. It could be a while. If you are self-conscious about it, have you thought about a bandana — they are in style now and it would help keep you warm in the winter weather. I also used a hair band to gather my hair together and away from my face to mask its falling out. I know what a horrible feeling it is–clump after clump. It will stop–on it’s own time. There are some herbs and vitamens, I believe that help people — I don’t know what they are. I had a roommate that took them to keep her hair from falling out more due to a thyroid medicine. hang in there, jc

Hi guys, Okay, so I’m wondering if anyone knows how long it takes for one’s hair to stop falling out after stopping ed behaviours and returning to a "normal" diet. My hair is STILL falling out in clumps and it’s been about 2 months or so (yes I know that’s a short time but it seems like it would have slowed down) and I think it may be worse now than it was before. I’ll ask my nutritionist about it next time I see her, but I don’t see her again until mid December. Anyway, just wondering if anyone knows how much longer I can expect my hair to fall out….I swear I’m starting to see bald spots and that’s a major deal for someone with waist length hair (or near there anyway…it’s about 2 inches above).
