? about prog. supp.

Question:

I have just started using progesterone suppositories this morning per the direction of my RE.  I use 50mg in the morning and at night….my questions are these: *I have found them to be extremely messy, with a lot of discharge.  If I have a lot of discharge after inserting one, is it still effective?  (I was told to lay down for 15 min. after insertion, but still have tons of discharge!) *What kind of symptoms can I expect with the progesterone? *Will I still start my period on my own (if I am not pregnant) while using the progesterone? *Does 50mg twice daily sound like an adequate dose?   Thank you so much for your time and any answers would be appreciated!  Fertile thoughts to all….. Response:

Amber,        I too am on 50mg or progresterone suppositories, same as you I was told to use them twice daily. Once in the morning and once in the evening.   As you are, I too was conserned about the discharge.   I called my RE’s office and the nurse told me that its normal, and that in the 15 mins or so that I laid there, enough was absorbed to be completely effective.   *What kind of symptoms can I expect with the progesterone?

From what I read and have been told, everyones symptoms are different.  For me I have the sore boobs, and the full stomach.  Other then that I did have cramps yesterday, which worried me at first since i am only one week in to my two week wait.  But they have gone, and i’m guessing it was from the progesterone.   *Will I still start my period on my own (if I am not pregnant) while using the

progesterone?     Yes, the nurse who did the IUI and gave me the prescription for the prog supp, told me that if I do not get af, to call for a blood test.  I’m assuming that means if i’m not pregnant, af will be here on schedule. *Does 50mg twice daily sound like an adequate dose?

This is the first time they have me on progesterone, so I dont really know what the dosage range is.  Although since I am taking the same dose as you, i’m hoping that it’s adequate. Pam

Amber, You poor thing, hang in there. Tell Dh to stop being a baby, you need

<<I have found them to be extremely messy, with a lot of discharge.  If I have a lot of discharge after inserting one, is it still effective?  (I was told to lay down for 15 min. after insertion I usually lay down for an hour after insertion.  I think it helps lessen the discharge, and helps ensure that the progesterone gets absorbed. <<*What kind of symptoms can I expect with the progesterone? Maybe pms symptoms, or no symptoms.  I usually don’t get any symptoms. <<*Will I still start my period on my own (if I am not pregnant) while using the progesterone? I never do.  I always get a blood pregnancy test, and my period doesn’t start until 4 days after stopping the suppositories.  I can purposely delay my period by staying on the suppositories. <<*Does 50mg twice daily sound like an adequate dose?   Yes, assuming this is an IUI or natural cycle.  More may be necessary post IVF or FET.

Mine are a little messy, but I can get away without wearing a pad. My pharmacist said he uses child-sized suppositories to keep down the mess. *What kind of symptoms can I expect with the progesterone?

My breasts get a little sore, but that’s about it for me. *Will I still start my period on my own (if I am not pregnant) while using the progesterone?

I do, even though my RE didn’t think I would. No wasted money on pregnancy tests here (no pregnancies, either, though). Barb Barbara Philbrick, Caslon Services Inc. Cleveland, OH

I’ve never done the suppositories – just Crinone 8% twice a day – and I always reacted to it.  For the two weeks following an IUI, I had some slight irritation, but on the lucky cycles where I conceived and had to continue, the irritation grew.  Sometimes it would hurt to even sit, but this was never a continuous thing.  One day it would hurt and the next it wouldn’t.  I always knew it was something I HAD to do so I just did it.  However, I didn’t have much problem getting gel in (Crinone comes in an applicator).  You should speak to your doctor about your irritation.  My doctor considered mine *normal*, but yours may have a different opinion or a different option for you. Good luck. Nicole

<<i am wondering if anyone else is using the suppositories and getting a reaction from  them?? …t hurt way too bad and burned– The first cycle I used the suppositories I had a lot of irritation….itching, burning, etc.  It was just awful, and I swore I’d never use them again. However, I *did* use them again, for several cycles after that, and the irritation problem never returned.  It was just that first cycle…..not sure why, but I suspect it had to do with having been on clomid with very dry/poor mucus (I didn’t use clomid t/following cycles)

Response:

I’m using supp. and so far the only side effect is gastrointestinal problems at night.  I used crinone 8% once a day for my first IVF, now on my 2nd IVF they put me on prog, supp. twice daily.  I have 7 days to my first preg test.

Response:

You might be allergic to an ingredient used to make the suppository.  Tell your doc.  It may just be a matter of having them made differently, or switching to Crinone. Stephanie

Response:

I have been using the progesterone suppositories for the last 2 cycles.  I haven’t had any side effects, iching, burning, etc. Good Luck, Jane

Response:

hi, i’m a pharmacist and dispense lots of progesterone suppositories and it is rare that people react to the suppositories because the base that I use at least is very bland….I usually tell the RE and/or patient to insert them rectally instead of vaginally….they have no local action….they have to be absorbed to work…think about it…good luck..I’ll look for your results… joe
