dazed and confused

Question:

I was told by an ob/gyn about 6 or 7 years ago that I had something called polycystic ovaries.  He treated it by telling me to stay on bc pills.  I got fed up with the birth control pills about 3 years ago and stopped taking them.  Since then, I’ve gained about 50 lbs. and plucked a lot of hair off my chin. Last week, my mom sent me an article in the Dallas Morning News about all the new research on pcos.  It listed the pco web site which led me to this newsgroup.  I’ve done a lot of reading.  I feel that I have match every symptom for having pcos (except having acne) and being insulin resistant.  I went to my nurse practicioner who had never heard of PCOS.  She said she would do some research and get back to me. She called back and said that based on what she knew so far, she’d be willing to prescribe Metformin — pending the results of my blood work. Well, now the blood work has come back normal.  She is going to go over the results with me on Wed.  I feel at a loss.  I finally felt like ‘hooray, I’m not crazy, now I understand why I only have a period every 45 days, why there is excess hair on my chin, why I’m thick through the middle and why I have gained so much weight in the last few years’.  Any ideas about what else I should ask the nurse when I see her on Wed? Thanks, Madge

Response:

Madge, you can still have pco and not be insulin resistant. Many  women without IR still go on metformin and see +++ results. My advice is to research metformin and pcos on the web and bring in the info/studies to your Dr. also low carbing seems to help many women with pcos. Take care… shelley

Response:

Maybe you should go take an ultrasound to find out if you have pcos or not you can tell by internal sonogram Deena
